"YiYi's: Essence of Taiwan" is a nonprofit project introducing Taiwan culture and the work of Taiwanese artisans and craftspeople to the world through exhibitions, cultural events, and educational workshops.

Working in the Taiwanese-American community over the years, we have marveled at the unique beauty of Taiwanese art and crafts. Hand-woven shoulder bags, unfolding tribal legends of their aboriginal artisans. Carved-stone pieces that tell the tale of a mountain and its people. Sparkling jewelry and gemstones reflecting the cosmopolitanism of urban Taiwan.

This project was born of the desire to make the work of Taiwanese artists and craftspeople available to the world.

Our name "YiYi" is composed of the dual Mandarin (hanji) character "Yi" which means "heart" and "Taiwan." This name goes to the heart of our mission: to promote Taiwanese culture by introducing its heart-warming arts and crafts to you.

Every gift item or artwork we carry tells about the lives of the people behind them - the history, the culture, the wisdom. And every selection comes with a "thank-you" card that includes an informative, bilingual (English and Mandarin) item description.

Most importantly, we have made a special effort to reach out to artists who seek to empower or, even, to re-build their communities by creatively transforming local, natural materials into beautiful artwork or handicrafts.
